Campden Fair Raises £725 for Pool Fund.

October Fair 1963

E.J. report transcribed by Tess Taylor.

Undeterred by the bad weather, parents, friends & many others interested in the school or a ‘good cause’ supported a successful October fair in aid of Chipping Campden Grammar School’s swimming pool fund.

It was disclosed that the intention to build the pool at the school mainly by private effort, and possibly in three stages; firstly  an open-air pool with infilteration plant; secondly, the addition of a heating plant, and finally, the total covering in of the pool. It is hoped that contemplated building additions & alterations will start very soon & that it will be possible to coincide the first stage of the pool with these & also to make some provision for the future heating.

Miss Michelle Dotrice, star of TV & films, who performed the opening ceremony, was an added attraction to the crowd of about eight hundred who supported the event. A highlight of the opening ceremony was the presentation to Miss Dotrice for fair funds for a cheque for one hundred guineas, a donation fron the Weston Subedge Social Group. This generosity was warmly applauded and it helped to take the fair proceeds to a figure of approximately £725.

This result was achieved in spite of the weather & the curtailment of the outdoor activities. Some children braved the elements & kept the ponies busy, but a well laid out golf course had to be abandoned. The bowling for the pig was also abandoned, but the pig was auctioned & after some lively bidding was knocked down to Captain Priestman for £10,

The swimming pool fund now stands at over £2,200 & is a measure of the work done by parents & the school & reflects great credit on them & other benefactors. (There followed a list of competition winners that included Miss Bracken for the best handkerchief duck.)
