Election of Foundation Scholars & Non- exhibitioners 1869

The Grammar School: Election of Foundation Scholars and Non-foundation Exhibitioners, Easter 1869: – The following boys were head of the list in the scholarship Examination: William Wykeham Hiron, John Horne, Nathan Izod Kingzett, Walter Greenhouse, Peter Haines and William Henry Lane. Except Kingzett who left school at Lady Day, all the above boys were on Thursday last, elected by the Trustees to be ‘Free Scholars on the Foundation, ‘ for one year from Midsummer next. At the same time Charles Richard Summerton, the seventh candidate on the list in the competitive examination, was also elected a scholar, for a like period, to fill the vacancy caused by Kingzett’s departure. The Headmaster’s School Exhibition for boys not on the foundation, were assigned to Charles Henry Caffin, George. L. F. Way, and Francis Crawford Caffin, the first three candidates in the annual competetive examination for Exhibitions. The prize to be given to the first scholar or exhibitioner, in the general list, was gained by Charles H. Caffin; & W. W. Hiron, G. L. Way, and J. Horne were also honourably mentioned.
